Changing the SE Fuel Pump
The fuel tank does not have to be dropped to change the fuel pump as one SE owner was advised. The shop giving the erroneous information charged him $700.00 to change a defective fuel pump. The installer incorrectly changed the position of the fuel tank quantity float on installation which gave erroneous readings. I removed the fuel pump and quantity indicator from the top as it should have been done and found the quantity float installed incorrectly. The float arm must swing to the left or to the center of the vehicle.
Problems that you may run into are: You must remove the couch and remove the carpet on the diagonal panel and on the floor right below it. Then remove both metal panels which have sheet metal screws in them. Everything is now exposed to work on.
You must cut the fiberglass frame on the bottom, where the diagonal cover came off so you can remove the pump. It is possible that the factory incorrectly cut the hole in the floor off center and you may have to make the hole larger.
Check that all hoses and clamps are tight. Pay particular attention to the fitting at the back of the tank. It is a float check valve and the hose from it goes to the charcoal canister in the back mounted to the frame in the engine compartment. Make sure the fitting is tight in the tank. If the fitting is loose it will leak fuel when you fill your tank and you will smell fumes in the couch.
When reinstalling the diagonal cover, pop rivet the piece you cut off the bottom of the fiberglass frame to the cover and it will go right back in place where you cut it out.
I recommend you reinforce the bottom of your fuel tank to prevent it from sagging between the support straps or from a foreign object strike. The easiest way to do this is to loosen the fuel tank straps and slide in two pieces of painted steel 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick by 5 inches wide side-by-side the length of the tanks. Then tighten up the tank support straps.
